Eve Online: MMORPG

So, I finally took the plunge and signed up for a subscription game.

Eve Online is supposed to be a sci-fi MMORPG in which you can build empires, increase your wealth, and and build corporations.

Let me tell you what it really is…

It’s buggy.

You regularly lose ships because of in-game bugs. Not able to jump through gates, getting shot up in warp, etc.

It’s got poor customer support.

You can request a reimbursement of in-game items if a bug does get you (which is likely). But it will take them an astounding 2 days for a response. That is RIDICULOUS.

It has no story line.

You fly around doing the same thing over and over. You risk losing your ship to the buggy software, at which point you have to fly all over replacing the things you lost because CCP gamemasters have an outstanding record of replacing items through their reimbursement system. Ask anyone who plays the game.

Play time.

It’s been my experience that AT LEAST once every couple weeks CCP is scheduling “extended downtime” to fix their infrastructure. For a service that charges a monthly rate, their uptime should be of paramount importance. I don’t accept this kind of behavior from my ISP and I refuse to accept it from a game vendor. You shouldn’t either.

What you get.

You get to pay $15 US /mo to be a beta tester. Yep, that’s right, you will basically be a tester for this bug ridden heap they call software.

Some advice.

If you are looking for a sci-fi MMORPG, keep looking. Do NOT stop at Eve Online. If you do, you will not get your money’s worth. My advice is pick something from one of the bigger players like Sony. CCP is way out of their league.

Planetside, here I come.
